Somewhere in most firms is a quiet fear about the software that holds their case data: that leaving it, or even reaching around it, would be difficult, contentious, or risky. The records are the firm’s lifeblood, but they live inside a system somebody else controls — and that control has a way of becoming leverage.

A record belongs to the firm, not the software

We think that is backwards. A firm’s files — its matters, its history, its clients’ records — belong to the firm. Any software that touches them, ours included, is a tenant in that data, never its landlord. The measure of a trustworthy system is not how well it holds you in. It is how easily you could leave.

Read from what you have, export what we build

In practice that means two commitments. Workplex reads from the systems a firm already uses rather than demanding everything move into ours first. And everything it produces — the cited chronologies, the structured records, the work product — is the firm’s to export, in open formats, at any time, without asking.

Why we say this out loud

Naming this is uncomfortable for a software company, because lock-in is how a great deal of software makes its money. We would rather earn the relationship every month than trap it. A firm that stays because leaving would be painful is not a client — it is a hostage, and hostages do not renew because they are happy. Ours should.
