AI Legal Tools vs Traditional Legal Software

Case management software stores what you tell it. The newer tools read what you give them. Knowing which problem you have decides which one to buy.

Most firms already own legal software. Practice management, document storage, a billing system, a calendar. Then a new category arrives promising something that sounds similar and costs differently, and the question becomes what is actually different.

The dividing line is who does the reading

Traditional legal software is a system of record. It is very good at holding what a person has already decided: this is the matter, this is the party, this is the deadline, this is the document. It does not open the document.

The newer tools read. They take the raw file and produce structure from it: what type of document is this, what happened on what date, which physician said what. That is a different job, and it is the job that consumes attorney hours.

They are not substitutes

A firm that replaces its case management system with an AI tool has lost its system of record. A firm that expects its case management system to read twenty thousand pages will keep paying people to do it. Most firms need both, connected.

Questions that separate them

  • Does it change what arrives on an attorney’s desk, or only where it is stored?
  • Can every output be traced to a source page?
  • What happens to your data if you leave?
  • Is there a review step, and is it enforced or optional?
  • Is pricing tied to seats, or to work done?

The honest answer about accuracy

Anything that reads a file will sometimes read it wrong. The question is not whether that happens but whether the system is built to be checked: citations to source, a review gate before anything leaves, and a record of what was changed. A tool that cannot be audited cannot be used on a client matter.

Buy the system of record for the things you decide. Buy the reader for the things you currently pay people to read.
